Self-development using the 2014 Professional Standards


The Standards set out clear expectations of effective practice in education and training. This first workbook brings together a selection of tools and resources that will help you get the most out of the standards as part of your CPD.

The Education and Training Foundation (ETF) launched the new Professional Standards for the sector in May 2014, following a consultation with teachers and staff from across all areas of education and training. Since then they have been downloaded over 43,300 times, and we have distributed over 7,000 printed copies to practitioners and providers across the country.

The key aspect of the standards, driven by the desires of the sector, was to make them a set of aspirations, not a list of competencies. It was and is a different way to look at what skills and attributes individuals may need, and how they may want to develop them, throughout their career.

One of the challenges of taking an aspirational approach is the need for individuals to understand easily how the standards can be interpreted for their particular place of work and their career.

To complement the initial guidance that accompanied the standards the ETF commissioned a range of education providers throughout 2014-15 to create a set of ‘how to’ guides which are now available on the Excellence Gateway site. The first workbook, Self-development using the 2014 Professional Standards, brings together a selection of tools and resources that will help you get the most out of the standards as part of your CPD. Everything included in the workbook has been tested in workplaces already, and was shown to have a positive impact on those involved.
